What Is Complex Trauma?
Understanding Complex Trauma and How Therapy Can Help.
Complex trauma often stems from ongoing, repeated emotional wounds, like childhood neglect, inconsistent caregiving, or feeling unseen and unheard. If you're looking for complex trauma therapy in Toronto or anywhere in Canada virtually, this page will help you understand what you're experiencing and how therapy can help.
You may not think of what you’ve been through as “trauma.”
But maybe you’ve always felt on edge. Like you had to be who others needed you to be. Like something was wrong with you, even when you couldn’t explain why.

Complex trauma doesn’t always come from a single event.
It’s often rooted in ongoing emotional neglect, criticism, or instability, especially in relationships that were supposed to
feel safe.
What is Complex Trauma, and How Does It Affect Teens and Young Adults?
Complex trauma isn’t always about a single event, it’s often about what happened over and over, or what never happened at all. It can stem from emotional neglect, critical or inconsistent caregivers, chronic invalidation, or unsafe early environments. These experiences can shape how you see yourself, how safe you feel in relationships, and how you cope with stress.

Many teens and young adults who experienced complex trauma carry feelings of being “too much,” “not enough,” or chronically misunderstood. You might find yourself overthinking everything, avoiding closeness, struggling with boundaries, or feeling shut down and emotionally numb.

Trauma doesn’t always show up as flashbacks, it can look like shame, anxiety, perfectionism, or a deep sense of disconnection.
How Therapy Can Help:
You don’t need a specific label to start healing. At A New Perspective Psychotherapy, I offer trauma-informed therapy using Internal Family Systems (IFS), DBT skills, Mindfulness, and a compassionate, personalized approach, whether you’re navigating the aftermath of childhood trauma, emotional neglect, or relational trauma.

In therapy, we’ll gently explore what you’ve been carrying and begin to untangle the beliefs that no longer serve you.
We’ll work at your pace to:
-
Reconnect with parts of yourself that feel stuck, protective, or afraid
-
Understand how past experiences may still shape your present
-
Build emotional regulation skills that help you feel safer in your body and relationships
-
Begin to rewrite your internal narrative with more self-trust and compassion
Is There Help for Complex PTSD in Canada?
Yes. Therapy can support you in untangling long-held beliefs about yourself, your worth, and your relationships, especially with approaches like IFS, DBT, and trauma-focused care.
Whether you’re neurodivergent or neurotypical, this is a space where your experience will be honoured and explored with care.
