Feeling Behind in Life Compared to Everyone Else?

It can feel like everyone else is moving forward.

Someone is starting a new job. Someone got into grad school. Someone is travelling, moving out, getting engaged, building a career, or somehow seeming like they know exactly what they are doing.

And then there is you.

Maybe you changed programs, took time off, moved back home, ended a relationship, struggled through school, lost motivation, or feel unsure about what comes next.

You might wonder:

Why does everyone else seem ahead of me?

Why am I not where I thought I would be by now?

Why do I feel so stuck?

If you are a young adult feeling behind in life, you are not alone. Many people quietly carry this fear, even when they look fine on the outside.

Feeling Behind in Life Can Be Painful

Feeling behind is not only about school, work, money, or relationships. It can also bring up shame, anxiety, sadness, and self-doubt.

You may feel behind when you think about:

  • finishing school

  • choosing a career

  • finding a job

  • moving out

  • making money

  • dating or relationships

  • friendships

  • confidence

  • independence

  • knowing what you want

Your late teens, 20s, and early 30s can come with a lot of invisible pressure. You may feel like you are supposed to have a plan, know who you are, and be building a life that makes sense.

But many young adults are still figuring it out.

Real life does not move in a straight line, even when it looks that way from the outside.

Social Media Can Make It Worse

Social media can make everyone else look further ahead.

You see the graduation photo, the job announcement, the apartment, the relationship post, the trip, the engagement, or the career update.

What you usually do not see is the stress behind the photo. You do not see the uncertainty, debt, loneliness, family conflict, burnout, rejection, or quiet self-doubt.

Even when you know this, it can still hurt.

You may scroll and suddenly feel worse about your own life. You may start comparing your everyday reality to someone else’s most polished moment. You may question your choices, your progress, or your worth.

That does not mean you are jealous or ungrateful. It means comparison has touched something that already feels tender.

When You Thought Life Would Look Different by Now

Sometimes the hardest part is not where you are. It is the gap between where you are and where you thought you would be.

Maybe you thought you would feel more confident by now. Maybe you expected to be further along in school, work, money, relationships, or independence.

Instead, you may feel stuck, anxious, tired, or unsure.

You might ask yourself:

  • Should I be done school by now?

  • Should I know what career I want?

  • Should I be earning more?

  • Should I be more independent?

  • Should I have more friends?

  • Should I be in a serious relationship?

  • Should I feel happier than I do?

The word “should” can be heavy.

It can make you feel like you are failing, even when you are doing your best to manage school, work, family expectations, money, relationships, and uncertainty.

You Are Not Failing Because Your Path Looks Different

There are many reasons life may not unfold the way you expected.

You may have dealt with anxiety, depression, family stress, financial pressure, grief, academic struggles, breakups, health concerns, caregiving responsibilities, or cultural expectations that other people do not see.

You may have needed to pause.

You may have changed direction.

You may still be figuring out what fits.

You may be tired from trying to keep up.

None of that means you are failing.

It means your story has more context than a timeline can show.

What You May Need Right Now

When you feel behind, it can be tempting to be harsh with yourself.

You may think that if you criticize yourself enough, you will finally get motivated. But shame usually makes things feel heavier. It can make decisions harder, rest more uncomfortable, and the future feel even more overwhelming.

Instead of asking, “What is wrong with me?” it may help to ask:

  • What have I been carrying that people do not see?

  • Whose expectations am I trying to meet?

  • What do I actually want?

  • What feels unclear right now?

  • What is one next step that feels realistic?

  • What support would make this easier?

You do not need to solve your whole life at once.

Sometimes the next step is simply being honest about where you are.

How Therapy Can Help When You Feel Behind

Therapy can offer a place to talk about what you are carrying without pretending you have everything figured out.

For young adults, therapy may help with:

  • anxiety about the future

  • feeling lost in your 20s or early 30s

  • comparison and self-criticism

  • school, work, and relationship stress

  • pressure from family or culture

  • difficulty making decisions

  • feeling stuck or unmotivated

  • building realistic next steps

Therapy is not about being told what to do with your life. It is about having support while you sort through what matters to you and what may help you move forward.

A summer therapy intensive may also be helpful if you want focused time to talk through what has been building before September, school, work, placements, or other responsibilities pick up again.

FAQ: Feeling Behind in Life

Why do I feel behind in life even though I am trying?

You may feel behind because you are comparing your life to other people’s visible achievements. You may also be carrying stress, anxiety, burnout, family pressure, or uncertainty that others cannot see.

Is it normal to feel lost in your 20s?

Yes. Many people feel uncertain in their 20s, especially around school, career, relationships, money, identity, and independence. It can be a time of major change, and it is common to feel unsure about what comes next.

Can therapy help if I feel stuck?

Therapy can help you slow down, understand what feels heavy, and sort through what feels unclear. It can also support you in choosing realistic next steps instead of trying to figure out everything at once.

You don't need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
